- Reference: MyHeritage Family Trees - SmartCopy: Jan 3 2017, 16:04:46 UTC
There is considerable confusion about the wives and children of John Edward Gunter. According to the William Gunter Descendants genealogy, this John Gunter had two wives - Sarah (possibly Goodson), and Amy Tillotson; unconfirmed order.
John Gunter, b. c. 1730, appears first in Chesterfield Co., VA, in the 1750's, married to Amy daughter of John and Elizabeth Tillotson. John Gunter moved to Guilford Co. NC where he probably died (land sold at auction).
Will Rogers Official Genealogy by Pat Lowe says the children of John Gunter and Amy Tillotson were John, Joel, Augustus, William, Claiborne, Elizabeth, and James.
Daughter of the Republic of Texas states: "Claiborne Cooper Gunter was a descendant of John and Sarah (Goodson) Gunter of Edgecombe County, NC. Sarah was supposed to be related to the Claiborne family of Virginia. Her son, Claiborne Gunter Sr., was the first of eight generations to bear the name of Claiborne (Clabourn, Claburn, Clayborne, Clayburn) Gunter."
