Hawkes Bay Times 4 February 1869
Man Missing at Wairoa.—We learn by the Muriwai that a man named John Gemmell, better known as " Scotch Jock," has been missing for some time, and it is feared he has been murdered by the Hauhaus. His wife who is a native, had taken a letter to the Hauhaus, and on the day of Captain Spiller's expedition he followed her and has not been seen or heard of since.

Hawkes Bay Herald, 9 March 1869
John Gemmell, known in the Wairoa district as Scotch Jock, who some time since followed his native wife on an errand to the Hauhaus, is now on good grounds believed to have been shot. Toha lately took an old man at the Puturi, who volunteered this information.

A familiar figure in Wairoa for many years, "Davey Diamond," passed away recently at his home on the east side of the river near Te Uhi. He was the son of an old pioneer of Te Wairoa in the early whaling days, David Gemmell or Gamble, known by the soubriquet of "Scotch Jock." His mother was a woman of high rank among the N'gatikahungunu, who afterwards, as was common in the pre-pakeha days, became the wife of the Kurupakiaka chief, Hamana Tiakiwai, and died only a few years ago. When a youth of eighteen he joined the Armed Constabulary No. 1 division, and served three years, seeing much active service under Colonel Whitmore and other officers on the West Coast. He was present at the battle of Ngutu-o-te-Manu on September 7th, 1868, when the gallant,Von Tempsky was killed, along with Captains Buck and Palmer, Lieutenants Hunter and Hastings. The old soldier's war medal only arrived on the day of his death.
