About John Hamilton

Not the same as John Hambleton.... true but name spellings are meaningless and John Hamilton of Nanjemoy has been recorded as 'Hambilton'. Caution is always the word!

Its been reasonable to 'assume' from 'unsourced' secondary sources (Lamar Hamilton and Marie kelley ) although Louise Donnelly at Southern Md College has disputed and questioned the two writings, The proper name, John is #1, especially in England and Scotland with many John Hamiltons as well making it difficult to differentiate with lack of records. We are not even sure of a birth from which many other John Hamilton's share similar dates. This far back in history, birthdates are generally meaningless and serve only as a placeholder/ estimate in time. Mike Marshal at https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I9546... now shows 1634 but that date appears to bounce around as there are no good sources and only secondary family writings. From kELLEY, "John became the deputy Sheriff for the Charles County". This maybe the catholic, John, son of Alexander.

Kelley's Ambiguous page as she says "we have positive proof (as follows) of two sons: Alexander and John." than goes on to simply describe the family of Alexander without basis of being a son. Simple evidence of a family is not evidence of a link to another. Further she says "but he, 'together' with his wife, Elizabeth, came in 1674". Elizabeth did immigrate to Maryland but from Hangars Parish in Northampton VA. Her statement than would imply John immigrated first to Northampton which could be true as many landings that early did arrive first in VA. There is not a good source for Elizabeth birth but her parents were supposedly married in Hungars 1 sep 1658 [Marshall] and immigrating 1659 to the MD colony. Thus she was born in 1659 or After in the MD colony. They most certainly did not immigrate together in 1674 when Elizabeth may have been 15 or less!

Note on Early Settlers by Gust Skordas and amendment (basically suggest all the older research needs reconsidering on the basis of immigration at least): (https://msa.maryland.gov/msa/speccol/sc4300/sc4341/html/foreword.html: In 1994, Dr. Gibb told Edward C. Papenfuse, Archivist of the State of Maryland, that he had found in the Land Office records names not in The Early Settlers of Maryland and that he was ready to search the records for more. Dr. Papenfuse invited Dr. Gibb to use a computer in the Archives, arranged for Lynne MacAdam and Betsy Bodziak to guide him through the process of database indexing, and offered to publish his work in both electronic and book form. Dr. Gibb proceeded accordingly and, over a period of several years, found over 8600 omissions and other errors now corrected in A Supplement. In doing so, he helped us not only to understand better the nature of the records but also to think more carefully about designing indexes in the future.

"JOHN HAMILTON I.

It cannot be found, after years of earnest search, from what port in England or Scotland, the emigrant, John Hamil¬ ton I, of the Charles County, Maryland, line, sailed; but he, together with his wife, Elizabeth, came in 1674. She was the daughter of Thomas Burdit and wife, Verlinda Cotton, daughter of William Cotton, whose wife was Anna Graves. They came to Maryland in 1659. (Liber 4, Folio 48, “Early Settlers.”)

September 25, 1661, “Bird’s Nest” of 300 acres was sur¬ veyed for Thomas Burdit. In 1663 he transported his son Francis Burdit. (Liber 5, Folio 307.)

Thomas Burdit and Verlinda had children:

1. Elizabeth Burdit, who married John Hamilton and emigrated with her husband in 1674, fifteen years after her parents. (Liber A. B. H., Folio 311, 106.) (Liber 18, Folio 39.)

2. Parthenia Burdit, who never married.

3. Catherine Burdit, who married Richard Boughton.

4. Francis Burdit, who was transported by his father, 1663.

5. Sarah Burdit, who married Gerard Fowke, son of Anne Sewall Fowke.

John Hamilton I and wife, Elizabeth Burdit Hamilton, had children:

Alexander Hamilton-, born about 1675, died 1730.

John Hamilton II, born about 1678, died 1709; married Elizabeth Harrison, born 1685.

John Hamilton I died 1682 leaving no will. His widow administered on his estate before March, 1683.

How many children John Hamilton left is not definitely known, however, we have positive proof (as follows) of two sons: Alexander and John.

In 1678 John Douglas, for his love and affection, gives 100 acres of St. Edmund’s to John Hamilton. (Semme’s notes.) (Deed Liber IT, No. 1, 1678-1680.)

In 1679 John Hamilton was deputy sheriff of Charles County, Maryland. The same year, for divers causes, Geo.

Thompson gives John Hamilton, Gent, tract lying in Nanjemoy Fork of Potomac River. (Deed Liber II. No. 1, 16781680.)" ...... From Internet archive
