Mr. John Henry Hannan, .who died at his residence, Howetown, Port Pirie, on Saturday, was 85 years of age. He was a fine type of the old school of pioneers, and was widely known and respected. His. family formed a link with the earliest days of settlement of South Australia. His father (the late Mr. Garrett Hannan, sen.) and mother arrived at Port Adelaide from Scotland by the Navarino, in 1837. They first settled at Magill, where Mr. John Henry Hannan wbb born, in 1843, and a few years later the family took, up land, which, afterwards subdivided, became the township of Smithfield. A move was made to Marrabel, where, in 1868, Mr. Hannan, jun., married Miss Ellen Evans, of Mintaro. They settled in the Eudunda district, of which place Mr. Hannan eventually become the founder and pioneer, being instrumental in having his land cut up in township allotments, and being responsible. for the naming of the town. Going further north, Mr. Hannan took up land in the Hundred of Pirie, being one of the first agricultural settlers in that die the late Mr. John Henry Hannan founder of Eudunda district.
His pioneering spirit carried him still further north, and in 1878 he became the proprietor of a large tract of country in the Winninowie district, where he successfully carried on farming and grazing for many years. From there he carted wool to Port Augusta, prior to the construction of the railway line to the northern port. Pioneering and developing new country appealed to him, and having to the last a retentive memory he was able to relate many interesting incidents in connection with early outback experiences. A few years ago he disposed of his northern property and retired to Quorn, later residing at Port Pirie. His hobbies for leisure hours were reading and music. He was a competent violinist. He has left a widow, four sons, and five daughters— Messrs. Gerald Hannan (W.A.), T. H. Hannan (V.), J. H. Hannan (Kimba), F. H. Hannan (Quorn), Mrs. E. T. Moran (Prospect), A. Sheridan (Hookma), A. McBride (Port Pirie West), E. Donovan (Peterborough), and Miss K. Hannan (Port Pirie West). There are 42 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Mr. Frank Hannan, of the Hundred of Pirie, is sole surviving brother of deceased, and Mr. A. J. Hannan (Crown Solicitor) in a nephew.
