John Harriman, of New Haven

John and Leonard Harriman, (brothers,) Yorkshire Puritans, emigrated from Rowley, in Yorkshire, England, about the year 1638, Leonard being sixteen years of age. He is believed by some to have been of the first company.

• From Stephen Gauss: Harriman Family Association research now shows that he was born in Uldale, Cumbria, England.

According to Dexter: This is probably John Harriman who died Nov. 21, 1683. He married in 1646/7 ELIZABETH (surname unknown). John Harriman, my immigrant ancestor, took the oath of fidelity in 1644 in New Haven by Theophilus Eaton, Gov. of New Haven Colony. In 1648, he and Elizabeth kept an "ordinary" (inn) in the mansion originally built by Dep. Gov. Goodyear in New Haven, which was operated by his sons until 1690. In that year, his son-in-law & my ancestor, CAPT. JOHN MILES, purchased and operated the inn.

"John Harriman was a resident of New Haven, Connecticut, in 1646. He was the "innholder", that is, he kept an inn. His wife's name was Elizabeth, and they had children named John, Jr., baptized January 24, 1647 and a graduate of Harvard College in 1667; our ancestress, Elizabeth; Richard, Samuel, and Mary, all of whom were mentioned in his will. In this will of 1681, he calls himself 'stricken in years.'

The Harriman Inn was in a house built on land in New Haven originally allotted to William Hawkins of London. However, he did not emigrate, and the lot was bought by Deputy Governor Goodyear. He built the house, which became known as the 'mansion house.' After Goodyear's death, John Harriman purchased the house and converted it into an inn. When he died in 1683, one of his sons operated the inn until 1690. In that year Captain John Miles, our ancestor, took over and operated it."

Additional notes

John Harriman was a well-to-do inn keeper in New Haven, Ct., in 1646. He had wife Elizabeth. His son John was baptised at New Haven Jan. 24, 1647, attended Harvard College, married Hannah Bryan, a daughter of Richard, of Milford, Ct., Nov. 20, 1672. She was born 1654. He was a settled pastor of the first Presbyterian church at Elizabethtown, N.J., Oct. 1, 1687. He was given a land grant of one hundred acres by the Proprietors Feb 20, 1693.
