John Hart Sr is presumed to have been born in England. He might have settled first in Massachusetts or Connecticut, possibly the area of Hartford where many Harts settled.

A record was found of John Hart and wife Mary as passengers arriving In New England in 1635.[1]

He was in Middleburgh, Long Island (later Newtown, Queens Co., NY) by 1659. Bailey names his wife as Mary ________ referencing a land transaction dated January 5 1690. [2] All of the children are named in the will except John, the eldest son, who sold land in Maidenhead, Hopewell, Burlington County, NJ to George Cooke in Newton, and signed his name John Hart Jr. This was said to be his 'absolute state of inheritance'. On page 172 Bailey suggests that inheritance was a land transaction in 1684 in Newtown. A discussion citing town records, land transactions, church records and wills is used to determine the ancestry of John Hart, the Signer.[3]

Children of JOHN HART and MARY (UNKNOWN) are:

  1. 2. i. JOHN2 HART, b. 1636; d. 1712. He married MARY HUNT, daughter of RALPH HUNT and ELIZABETH JESSUP.
  2. ii. SARAH HART.
  3. iii. SAMUEL HART, d. Newtown Long island, NY.
  4. iv. SUSAN HART.
  5. v. WILLIAM HART.

He died in Mashpeth Kills leaving a nuncupative will in 1671 written whilst on his death bed, in precinct Newtown where he resided. Witnesses are named as Thomas Wandell and his wife Anne, Humphrey Clay and his wife Sarah and as it reads "other neighbours." He left his plantation and other goods to four of his children which he named as Samuel, William, Susan and Sarah. To his eldest son (unnamed) one shilling as he had already his inheritance. Letters of Adminisration to the son Samuel Hart in the 23rd of His Majesty's Reign 1671 (no day or month recorded, order within wills would suggest about November). [4][5]

Our first John Hart lived in Newtown, L.I., which borders on Flushing. Where he came from is not determined. He was an original settler and a large land-owner in a region called Maspeth Kills--a territory reaching down to a creek that bounded the town on one side, and containing, with much good meadow, salt marshes, an island, and low land. His will, recorded in the New York Probate Office (Vol. I, p. 153), and proved in 1671, names the children, with the exception of the eldest son (John), who, having already received his portion, is given one shilling. To the others--Samuel, William of Menticock (Matinicock, near Oyster Bay, L.I., an old Friends' settlement), Sarah, and Susan--was given the farm.

Much information is gleaned of the Newtown Harts from the old town records and deeds at Jamaica, and from an old book found with the town clerk at Newtown. Our knowledge of John Hart (1st) begins March 11, 1668, as stated in the Annals of Newtown, when he and James Way secured the meadow land at Maspeth Kills, which had been in dispute between Bushwick and Newtown. __

John is presumed to have been born in England. He might have settled first in Massachusetts or Connecticut. He was in Middleburgh, Long Island (later Newtown, Queens Co., NY) by 1659. He died leaving a will in 1671, presumably in Newtown where he resided.

Note: His memorial is tentatively placed in this location based on his residence. No documentation of a gravestone or burial here has been found.

Note: Heartfelt thanks to Mary Jo C. Martin for creating this memorial.
