Page I found a statement in Judy Schramm's article "Elizabeth Garst, daughter of Frederick Garst I" which says "Michael T. Hartman is Jacob Garst's grandson; his daughter Catharine had married John N. Hartman in 1812." If Judy has the right middle initial, this John N. Hartman would have been the J. N. Hartman who was buried in 1844 in the John Hartman Graveyard.

I also looked at the 1830 Botetourt census and found only one John Hartman entered John N. Hartman. There were no other John Hartmans listed in the 1830 census.

I think it has to be our John Hartman and Catherine Garst due to the descriptions. First we know that the graveyard was on Cave Spring Lane. Second, we know that the WPA called it the John Hartman Graveyard. Third, we know that Michael Hartman, son of John, was living in Cave Spring Township during the 1870 census. We also know that the Schartzers, Lucketts, Coons, Wertzes and other related families were living in that neighborhood during the mid-1800s. Finally we know that the Our Garst Family book has an identical death date of March 2, 1844 for John Hartman.

The recent discussion about the Garsts and the Hartmans has been very educational, at least for me. While, like the rest of you, I can find no 1860 census information on Michael and Catherine Hartman and their children, I have found some related information on the births and deaths of Michael's parents: John Hartman and Catherine Garst Hartman (daughter of Jacob).

According to the W.P.A. survey of the 1930s, there was once a graveyard (long since entirely vanished) on Cave Spring Lane. Only two stones were found and recorded:

Hartman, J. N. / February 23, 1779 / March 2, 1844
Catherine, wife of / J. N. Hartman / December 2, 1790 / July 10, 1850.

Documentation of the above is from page 135 of "Roanoke County Graveyards Through 1920," compiled and published by the Roanoke Valley Historical Society, undated. There are seven different Hartman graveyards in this book. The one above is called the "John Hartman Cemetery."

I assume that J. N. Hartman is John Hartman and that wife Catherine is Catherine Garst, daughter of Jacob.
