LETTERS FROM OVERSEAS

John, Bergen Hausman Writes from France About Experiences as Member of the Battery Com under Detail—He is in the 304th Field Artillery.

MAKES ENEMY OBBERVATIONS John Bergen Hausman, of the 304th Field Artillery, writes from France: The B. C. Detail, of which I am a member, stands for Batter. Commander Detail, and consists of telephone operators and observers. My chum, from Washington, Califeur, and I, are the observers. Our job is to sit in the observation post with a pair of powerful field glasses or an instrument known as the scissors, and we watch everything that takes place in the enemy lines as far as we can see, and note all movements, discover batteries an report them to the major so that they can be dealt with as befits them, At night we watch for rocket or other signals from our infantry and give them a barrage or anything they want in that line. In the .Loraine sector I was observing four days in a row. Here we go up every third night for 24 hours. I have, been up 5 times so far and expect to go twice more before we go to rest camp. Have picked up quite a bit of dope which was made-use of to such good effect that our regiment has received a letter of commendation and thanks from the French. Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing a town set on fire by hitting an ammunition dump and shortly after two of our planes went over behind a cloud and set a big observation balloon on fire right under the noses of two German aviators, who were trying to guard it. The observer came down in a parachute. The Germans shot at our planes with all their guns but our aviators came back safe and in ten minutes later went back with three others and drove the German aviators out of the country.
