About John Hayes
concerns
The 3rd Earl of Erroll had two sons named John:
- a so-named son by his 1st wife Isabel Gordon - apparently did not marry, presumed to have died young, frequently confused with his half-brother immediately below
- a so-named son by his 2nd wife Elizabeth Leslie - styled "of Broganalesk", married Elizabeth Bunch, died after 1497 without issue
This John does not seem to be either of them; If he is not either of them, then he is attached to the wrong parents. Further research is warranted.
notes
Date of birth might specifically be 1461.
comments
Surname has also been reported to be Hays.
notes
From an unidentified source:
Andrew Finley married Janet Hay, a daughter of John Hay, of Erroll, Perthshire, a descendant of David De Haya, Sheriff of Forfashire, 1214 A. D., and also of William de la Haya, Cup Bearer to Malcolm IV, as he styled himself in a Charter in 1172, when he received the lands of Erroll in Perthshire. John Hay of Erroll was a great-grandson of Sir Gilbert Hay, a steadfast adherent of Robert Bruce. The Parish Register of Cupar Angus Abbey records the baptisms of their children.
