About John Hendricks

The following information was provided by Mrs. Laura Gubler Hendrix in a letter dated 31 August 1988. She outlines the difficulty in locating a link from Daniel Hendrix to his ancestors. The information is transcribed as she wrote it.

"John Hendrick is the link we have long been looking for. He is the father of Daniel Hendricks, b. 20 Oct 1764, married to Lydia Phelps. Daniel's birthplace is given as Grt Barrington, Berks, Mass., but this will, giving the connecting link, was drawn up in Hartford Co., Conn. Tho the spelling of the name is different, we have several clues that this is indeed the ancestor we have been searching for. First, the wife's maiden name is Barrett. We felt that Daniel's mother came from a Barrett family as Daniel named one of his sons George Barrett. Then we found in the St. George Temple records that the work had been done for his aunt Charlotte, who married a Barnes; this agrees with her name in the will."
"From here we find that the next generation back is Joseph Hendrick, then Israel, then to another Daniel who came to America before 1640, as he was given a grant of land in 1640 in Hampton, New Hampshire, near Haverhill, Mass. He married Dorothy Pike, daughter of John and Dorothy Daye Pike. The following is a copy of the will:

I, John Hendrick, Of Bristol in the county of Hartford, Conn., tho laboring under infirmity of body, yet being of sound mind and memory through the mercy of God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following:

First and principally resigning my soul into the hands of God, my Creator, humbly hoping for a blessed immortality thru the merits of Jesus Christ; and my body I desire may be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor, and as far as such temporal estate as God, in His great goodness, has been pleased to entrust me with, I give and bequeath the followeth:
First that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid out of my estate by my Excutor.<nowiki>----</nowiki>
Then I give and bequeath to my wife, Martha Hendrick, one third of all my movable estate for her own use and disposal, and also the used improvement of one third of my real estate during her natural life,--
Then to my son, Abel Hendrick, besides what he has already received of me, I give and bequeath to him the sum of two hundred sixty-six dollars, sixty-seven cents, to be paid him by my executor, the one-half in one year from my decease and the other half in four years for my decease.--
Then I give and bequeath to my son, Daniel Hendrick, in addition to what he has received, two hundred and sixty dollars, sixty-seven cents; to be paid him by my executor. The one half to be paid in two years from my decease, and the other half in five years from my decease.--
Then I give and bequeath to my daughter, Lurviah Parkhurst, in addition to what she has received, one hundred dollars to be paid her by my ececutor in six years from by decease.--
Then I give and bequeath to my daughter, Olive Patterson, in addition to what she has received, eighty dollars, to be paid her by my executor in three years from my decease.--
Then to my daughter, Charlotte Barnes, in addition to what she has received, one hundred dollars, to be paid by my executor within seven years from my decease.--
Then unto my youngest son, John Barrett Hendrick, I give and bequeath all my real and personal estate to be his own disposal.--
All I do hereby declare This to by my last will and testament reaching all other wills and testaments made by me heretofore, and I do hereby appoint my son, John Barrett Hendrick, to be the executor of this my last will and testament, in presence of I have set my hand and seal this 28th day of May 1801.
JOHN HENDRICK (seal) Sign by three witnesses:
Noadiah Hocher (as well as I could make out)
    Abigail Hocher
    Edward Hocher The forgoing will approved by Judge, July 6th, 1801 #1412 Pt.2 Vol 4-5, p. 160-161. F. 1687/Hartford, Conn.

LGH Note: It seems that it was our pioneer grandfather, Daniel Hendrix, who changed the spelling of the name, as his marriage in Grt. Barrington, Mass. was Hendricks, then next he spelled it HENDRIX.
