John was born in 1727 in Germany, probably as J. Hoch. John passed away on 12 April 1817 in High's Junction, Hampshire, Virginia (now West Virginia).
Tradition states that John High and his two brothers emigrated as mercenaries in the Revolutionary War. John was captured at the Battle of Trenton.
John married Elizabeth Haymaker about 1748. Their children included: Nancy, Jacob, John Jr, Henry Ulysses, Frederick Steinbeck and Mary Magdelena.
The earliest public record for John and Elizabeth is on the 1782 tax tables, which lists John as head of a household of nine, at the settlement on Mill Creek.
Before his death, he had purchased 1600 acres of land.
John and Elizabeth are buried in John High cemetery in Junction West Virginia. His headstone reads: JOHN HIGH, departed this life Ap 12, 1817 in the 91y of his age.
