Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. John Hobart studied at the College of Philadelphia and Princeton before studying theology under Bishop William White at Philadelphia. He was ordained deacon in 1798 and priest in 1800. He was elected assistant bishop of New York in 1811 and served as bishop from 1816 to his death in 1830. He was one of the founders of the General Theological Seminary in New York City and of Geneva College in Geneva, New York. The latter college was later renamed Hobart and William Smith Colleges in his honor. Hobart is honored with a feast day in the Episcopal Church on September 12.
