John I. Hoffman was born near the mouth of Laurel Creek in 1841, son of Israel Putnam and Anna (Black) (*)Hoffman. On Sept. 30, 1869, he was married to Elizabeth A. Trimble, daughter of Andrew and Barbara (Marple) Trimble.

He was a farmer, living near Arden, and a member of the G.A.R. He was also a merchant and was a postmaster six years. His maternal grandfather was John Black. His paternal grandfather was John Hoffman who settled near Meadowville in 1797.

John Hoffman served in the Union Army, fighting with Averell in all his campaigns. (**)A story from that period was that at the battle of Rock Gap, when the rebel bullets came like hell, he took shelter behind a stump, but immediately discovered that he was in a yellow jacket's nest. The Confederates made the attack hot in front and the yellow jackets made a bayonet charge in the flanks. He had the choice of staying where he was or facing the bullets. "He was not long in deciding he preferred the bullets in front to the yellow jackets in the rear and out from the stump he came". Details of his family history, the earliest family members, and of Civil War events were given in an extensive and interesting (***)article in which he spoke of his life and his eventual return to the very spot where he was had been born to "settle down". At the time of the article he was age 91 and in good health. He was preceded in death by his wife.
