John Holgate and his parents emigrated to West Australia on the Runnymeade, leaving Plymouth June 1856, arriving in Fremantle on 7 September 1856. The Holgates lived in Fremantle and this is where they met the Harwood family. On 5th April 1865 Reverend Bostock married John Holgate and Sarah Harwood at St John's Church of England, Fremantle. John and Sarah remained in Fremantle for another for 2 more years until 1867 they moved to the south west.
John worked as shop keeper in Albert Street, Busselton and as a mill worker at Quindalup. Sarah's brother, John Harwood, was one of the leading residents at Quindalup and a well-known figure on the Sussex Road Board for very many years.
Sarah and John had about eight children together and had been married for 66 years at the time of Sarah's death in 1931
