About John Holmes
"John" and "Holmes" are both very common names. Two men of that name were Members of Parliament in the period 1509-1558, one for Rye (1553-1555) and one for Boroughbridge (1554) and Ripon (1555) in Yorkshire. Enough is known about the Yorkshire man to be reasonably sure he's not the same person as this John Holmes (father's name was John, not Thomas; wife was Frances Tyndall).
Very little is known about the MP for Rye except that he may have lived at Appledore in Kent, six miles from Rye, and made a will on 23 Feb. 1557, which was proved three months later, providing for his wife, brother and nephew (this implies that he had no children, or at least no sons).
