John Holmes Dies at 81

John Robert Holmes, 81, retired Intermal Revenue Service employee and long-time resident of Phoenix, died Sunday in his home, 1746 W. Buchanan.

Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Memory Chapel, A.L. Mortuary, 333 W. Adams.

Burial will be at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Scottsdale.

A native of England, Mr. Holmes came to Arizona in 1895 and with his father, homesteaded and farmed land south of the Cashion. A part of the land now is site of St. John's Indian Mission.

In 1922, Mr. Holmes went to work for the Maricopa Highway Department and later for the Federal Land Bank. He retired in 1951 from the Internal Revenue Service.

Mr. Holmes is survived by his wife, Jennie Lee; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Stierwalt of Phoenix and Mrs. Charles Olvey of Venzuela; two sons, Robert Holmes and William Holmes, both of Phoenix; 20 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Wilson Holmes.
