John Howland was baptized 10 Aug 1541 in Newport Pond, London, England.[1][2]
About 1560, probably in London, John Howland married Emme Revell, the only daughter of Nicholas Ryvell and Audrey Michenar, and the sister and heir of Robert Ryvell, Citizen of London.[3] His wife was living in January but had died by September 1614.[2][4]
John Howland and Emme Revell had five children according to the baptism records but had only three known surviving children according to the Howland pedigree in The Visitations of the County of Surrey as follows:[1]
Between 1585 and 1608, the probate records of his four brothers, his mother and his wife confirmed there were John Howland, Nicholas Howland, and Margaret (Howland) Catesby, only three known surviving children of John and Emme Howland.
For example, in 1608, Giles Howland willed his two nephews, John Howland and Nicholas Howland "one blacke cloake" and their sister "Margaret Catesbye a blacke gowne of eighteene shillinge the yard and unto [blank] Catesbye her husband one blacke cloake of eighteene shillinges the yarde." It proves that they were only three surviving children of John Howland, the brother of Giles Howland.
Another example, in 1607, Robert Howland willed his brother, John Howland "the some of ffortie poundes, and I doe forgive him all such somes of money as he shall owe unto me at the tyme of my deathe," and he willed his sister-in-law, "Mistris Emme Howland wife of my saide brother John, my two greaten ewe white sylver bowles." Robert Howland also willed his two nephews, "John Howlande, the sonne of my said brother John, the sume of twentye poundes," and "Nicholas Howland my godsonne the other sonne of my said brother John, the sume of one hundred poundes, and also I give unto the saide Nicholas my god sonne all my chambers and lodginge in Grayes Inne aforesaide and all my estate and interest of and in the same. And to make the saide Nicholas Howland capable of the same, I have admitted him (in Maister Chaworths Reading) into the socyetie of Grayes Inne to be one of the fellowshippe of the said howse." He also willed his niece, "Margarett Catesbye, the daughter of my saide brother John the some of twenty poundes" and "Roberte Thomas and Margarett Catesbye the nowe children of the saide Margarett the some of tenne poundes a peice; the same to be delivered to Eusebia Catesbye theire ffather, for them and to theire use, uppon his acquittance testifying his receipte thereof."
It is consistent with the Howland pedigree during the 1623 visitation of Surrey County, and it proves that they were only three surviving children of John and Emme Howland.[7] This Howland branch of Essex and Surrey ends in 1655.
John Howland died on 31 January 1611 in Whitechapel, London, Middlesex, England.
John Howland was buried on 15 January 1611 at St. Mary's, White Chapel in London, Middlesex, England.[2][8]
The estate of John Howland was administered by his son John Howland on 10 September 1614 and then by Robert Catesby on 21 June 1626.[2]
