Notes

  • John Carraway Hubbard I, died young and his children were taken in by other people, by court ruling. John C, II went with his Uncle Peter and at the age 14, John C. was made legal ward of Peter. Peter decided to move with his family from SC.....they settled in IL, John, II went with them and for some reason, when they got to MS, John returned to SC and sold 100 acres of land. he had inherited from his father. It was during this time that he married. He returned to MS. I think this is the reason he stayed in MS.
  • 1791- On page 59, Marlboro County Court Minutes,Sept. term, 1791,it says that at John Hubbard's death, the children were to be bound by the court as follows: Agnes and John Carraway (Junior?) bound to Peter Hubbard (born 1755-uncle to children), William bound to John Little, Peter placed with Anne Baker.
  • Peter and his family are well recorded in IL.
  • 1786--This man is on page 8, Holcomb's book, "Marlborough Co., SC Minutes of the County Court, etc.", referred to as John Carraway Hubard, buying 100 acres from John Frazier in Dec. 1786.

Origins

Peter Hubbard (d. 1772) and Agnes (Chiles) Hubbard had five children of whom we have documented record, born in Caroline County:

  1. Elizabeth Hubbard, Born 22 Dec 1748. Married William Stubbs
  2. Peter Hubbard II, born 31 Jul 1756. Married Mary Odom
  3. William, born about 1762, has recently been established. (See preface). Married Jane Reeder.
  4. John Hubbard, Born 1763. Married Sarah Bridges.
  5. Manoah Hubbard, born abt. 1766. Family?

Peter Hubbard died while his children were still minors. At his death the remaining minor children were ordered by the court to be placed under the care of John Chiles, probably Agnes’ brother. This is documented in the court records of Anson County, NC from 16 January, 1773 as follows: "Ord. Peter Hubbard, John Hubbard, and Manoah, orphans of Peter Hubbard, dcd. be bound to John Chiles till of lawful age to learn the trade of car-penter, joiner, or blacksmith. Peter now 17; John 10, Manoah now 7 years old."
