About John Hubbard Stephens
Supplied by notes and copies of letters researched by Jessie Ellen Stephens and stored in the Frederic Henry Stephens Chinese chest, passed on by my mother, Grace Williams Smith Stephens to me, Roderic Gerard Stephens and copied here, February 5, 1998:
"Copied from old statistics in Missouri by William Rubins Stephens, my grandfather, Jan. 15, 1924, when he visited there after the death of my grandmother, Sarah Frances Dallas Stephens, who died at Dilley, Oregon in June, 1922. This letter was written by Grandfather's half-brother Charles Anderson Stephens to his son, John F. Stephens, who was a first cousin of my father, John Henry Stephens.
The Charles Anderson Stephens, writer of the folowing (sic) letter, married Sarah Townley, whose parents also came from Virginia.
John F. Stephens
My dear Son;-I will try to comply with your request.Your grandfather was born and raised in Virginia, one of a family of ten. Eight boys and three girls.John Hubbard Stephens (my father), Thomas, Wilson, Collins, Louis, Vaden, Pleasant, Billy were the boys. The girls were Susan, Sally, America.
Finally they all came to Tennessee except Uncle Tom, who died in Virginia. Louis, Vaden and William went to Illinois and died there. Collins went to Coffee Co. Tennessee the last I heard of him.Billy was living on Duck River, Tenn. when we left for Missouri in 1843 Pleasant - I lost track of him.The girls - I don't know who they married, except Sally married Sibert Johnes.
Your grandfather, John Hubbard Stephens, came to Tennessee as a young man and married Susan Williams who was also from Virginia. This was my mother. She died when I was 7 years old.My father returned to Virginia and married Mary Davis, my step-mother; came back to Tennessee and settled on Rock Creek in Martial Co. Louisburg was the County seat.
Your Grandfather Townley also came from Virginia. He and my step-mother were acquainted in Virginia. He came direct from there to Missouri.Your Grandmother Townley told me he landed here with only 50 (cents sign] in his pocket. So you are all of Virginia stock on both sides of the house.Pretty good stock.
I will tell you what I know about our ancestors. We are of Welch descent, the Stephens having come from Wales, a province on the south side of England joining St. Georges Channel and the Irish Sea.They settled in Virginia in an early day.If any of our stock of Stephens went to Kentucky, I don't know of it.
My father said the Welch way of spelling Stephens was "phe" instead of "vens", but I don't know the name of the county they come from in Virginia. However I have heard them speak of Rockmont
Donald, Linchburg, Pig River and many other rivers and towns there I don't know the names of now.
John Hubbard Stephens was born and raised in Pittsylvania Co. Virginia, and Mary Davis was born and raised in Franklin Co. Va., 10 miles from Musenville (spelling?) Virginia.Rockmount is on the boundary line between Tennessee and Virginia.
Mary Davis used to teach school here and board with her cousin, William Cowen, who was Indian Agent for the United States with the Chocktaws, Chickasaws and the Cherikees (sic). He and their Chief, John Rolf, moved their tribes to the Indian Reservation between Arkansas and Texas.I don't remember the date.
