John William Humphries (son of Elijah Uriah Humphries and Elizabeth "Betsey" Alexander) was born November 11, 1833 in Clarke Co., GA, and died March 16, 1863 in Baker's Creek, MS.
He married Sarah Elizabeth Noell on 1858 in Randolph Co., AL.
John William Humphries died at Baker's Creek MS. He was serving in Company G of the 30th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers.
His discharge papers read as follows:
"John William Humphries Corporal of Captain A. J. Durrett 30th Regiment of Alabama Volunteers, born in Clarke County in the State of Georgia. Age 30 years, 5 feet 9 inches high. Fair complexion, blue eyes, sandy hair, and by profession, a farmer, was enlisted by Col. C. M. Shelley at Talladega, Alabama on the 19th day of March, 1862 to serve 3 years and is now entitled to discharge by reasons of death.
The said John William Humphries was last paid by Capt. E. Johnson to include the 28th day of February, 1863 and his pay due from that time to the time of his death which occurred May 16, 1863."
