About John Hunter of Long Calderwood

JOHN HUNTER OF LONG CALDERWOOD

John Hunter of Calderfield (1729) John Hunter, portioner of Long Calderwood (1721 X 1745)

The Ancestry of the Hunters of Long Calderwood

It has been suggested that the ancestor of Hunter of Long Calderwood was Francis Hunter, son of Patrick Hunter of Hunterston, although evidence of relationship is not available. James Paterson said this in his history of the Counties of Ayr and Wigton: "Francis, from whom it is supposed that the Hunters of Long Calderwood were descended, and of which family was the eminent physician, Dr. Wm. Hunter, who was the son of John Hunter of Long Calderwood, by Agnes Paul, his wife, daughter of Mr Paul, sometime Treasurer of Glasgow, who was born 23d May, 1718, at Easter Kilbride, in Lanarkshire". Ayr and Wigton: 352 Clan Hunter promotes the same proposition: "Francis, from whom it is supposed that the Hunters of Long Calderwood were descended", Hunters of Scotland: Part 3

With regard to the ancestry pf the Hunters of Long Calderwood and the suggestions made by James Paterson, Andrew A. Hunter, the author of Hunter of Abbotshill and Barjag (1905), had this to say: "Inquiries made by myself of the late Col. Hunter-Weston proved that no record of this supposed descent exists at Hunterston, although his father-in-law, the late Mr. Robert Hunter of Hunterston, in the year 1865 went fully into the whole matter, with the assistance of legal and genealogical experts, and also with the help of the late Dr. William Hunter, of the Coldstream Guards, a direct descendant of Archibald Hunter, uncle of the celebrated brothers, to try to ascertain any information as to the connection of the two families; but none was forthcoming.
