John served in Company A, 14th West Virginia Infantry. He was captured twice during the war. He was first captured at Greenland Gap, West Virginia on 25 April 1863, but was paroled and returned to his regiment in May 1863. He was next captured on 9 May 1864 at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain, Virginia and sent to Andersonville. He died of Scorbutus on either 8 September 1864 or 10 September 1864.
