John Inglish

The Inglish Ferry in Virginia was named after the Inglish family. The family originally came from England. John came to Missouri in 1815 from Tennessee having lived in both Kentucky and Tennessee, He and his sons helped to make one of the first settlements in Central Missouri. He built the first brick house in this area near the mouth of Moniteau Creek. He and his sons were very influential in the formation of the government of the state and county. The first county court meeting was in his home April 2, 1821. The first entry of Circuit Court proceedings shows that court was opened at the home of John Inglish Jan 15, 1821. He was elected Representative in the first election held in Cole County. He served in the 2-3-5 and 8th General Assembly. He was defeated in 1832. He also served as County Judge for nearly a quarter of a century. John Inglish was a great fiddler and skilled hunter. He served as a Captain in the war of 1812. He married Mary Ann Bruton. The Brutons had a trace of Indian blood. At this time no records of the Bruton family are available.

The story is told that John Inglish is descendant of Thomas English. Thomas and his four sons fought in the Revolutionary War. One of these sons became so enraged at England that he said " To Hell with England from now on I will spell my name with an "I" And that is supposedly the beginning of the spelling of Inglish. The only records available to support this story is the 1790 census of Virginia, Thomas Inglish was listed in the Isle of Wright County and William Inglish in Richmond County.
