About John Ingoldsby

John Ingoldsby died by 2 May 1684 when inventory was recorded for his estate. Administrative bond was posted by his son Ebenezer Ingoldsby and Mannassoh Peck. In the division of his estate his relict Agnes Ingoldsby (second wife widow of Griffin) and his child Ebenezer Ingoldsby were his administrators and only heirs. Therefore he could not possibly be father to any of the children shown here who married and were living past 1684! I've attached images in Memories of Suffolk County Probate Case # 1359. NOTE: Many possibilities exist as to why Ebenezer was the only child listed in the probate documents. It DOES NOT mean Ebenezer was his only biological child.

John Ingoldsby was a sawyer by occupation in other words he sawed wood. He joined the church in Boston in 1641 as a "single man". He must have married Ruth in New England. He married the widow Agnes Griffen late in life and she was his widow and heir along with his only living child Ebenezer. Therefore only the children of Ebenezer can claim him as their direct ancestor. <--This is a speculative assumption, many possibilities exist as to why he was the only child listed in the probate documents

His estate totaled 78lbs and included mostly lumber, cloth and kitchen goods. Nothing to suggest he was literate or of aristocratic birth making it unlikely he was the son of Richard as shown currently. Still his bravery to come to New England as a single man and brave the frontiers of Maine and Massachusetts in the early 17th century is noble enough.

He was not father to John of Salem, Sarah and Elizabeth who both married in Roxbury. This is proven by the estate records.
