John D. Phillips in 1852 was one of the originators of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. The hospital was first named the "Jews Hospital of New York." It opened in 1857, and was open to any religion, but it served only kosher meals to accommodate the needs of Jews who were very uncomfortable to eat non-kosher foods in all the other hospitals in New York. Later, the name was deemed to seem unwelcoming to non-Jews, so it was changed to be "Mount Sinai Hospital."
