from Family Search notes

  1. "This John Jennings was the projenitor of a Sandwich family about which very little has appeared in print. He was not among the men listed as able to bear arms in 1643 and did not appear in the 1658 survey of land holdings. James Savage did not include him among the first settlers... The first record we find is the marriage of John Jennings, 29 [Aug] 1667 to Ruhama Turner. At that date both were members of the Sandwich Monthly Meeting of the society of Friends [Quakers]." They were both dead by 21 Nov 1723... "At a Court held at Barnstable 21 Nov 1723 'Isaac Jennings [submitted] his accompt of his administration on the Estate of John Jennings late of Sandwich, deceased, father..." from which the children listed below are determined.[1]

The marriage to Ruhamah Turner is cited with the Quaker dating convention as 29 day of 6th month 1667 in Vital Records of Sandwich Massachusetts p 1249 and in Vol. I, p. 62 of the original record. The compilation was created by Caroline Lewis Kardell and Russell A. Lovell, Jr. Gernert-16 13:27, 7 April 2015 (EDT)

JOHN JENNINGS was born around 1648, likely in Massachusetts. His parents are unconfirmed, as sources differ from Nicholas Jennings of Connecticut, Joshua Jennings of Fairfield, or other ideas. We do know that he was of the Quaker faith and was living in Sandwich when he married Ruhamah (maiden name likely Turner, daughter of Michael Turner due to the uniqueness of her name, but not confirmed) (~1650-1721), in 1667, as noted by Quaker monthly meeting records. Some records claim he was married to Susanna, but this was probably confused with John Jenkins, who had a wife named Susannah. Ruhamah was charged three times for fornication, once in 1664 and twice with John Ewen in 1665 and 1669. John and Ruhamah had 5 children: Remember; Ann (1670-~1732); John; Isaac; Elizabeth (died in infancy); and Samuel. He was a cordwainer (shoemaker). In 1675 the town listed the men that were had a “just right to the privileges of the town,” and his name was listed. He is noted to have taken the oath of fidelity in 1678, likely because he was a Quaker (often times Quakers would refuse this oath). In 1681 he was named, with 2 others, in a land grant from the town to receive bog meadow land. He became the constable for sandwich in 1690. He was a witness of two Wills in 1691 and 1698, and both of the individuals were Quakers. In 1702 he was on a list of freeman of Sandwich and that he was entitled to take part in a division of land. In 1708 he was named as the administrator of the estate of his son John. His son was a captain of a merchant ship and is said to have died in “foreign parts.” Ruhamah died in 1721 and John in 1722, both in Sandwich, Massachusetts. His estate was opened the following year, which listed his surviving children and the inventory valued his property at a little more than 45 pounds and included Quaker books.

The link to Elizabeth Reynolds is questionable, given the many John Jennings that are recorded in this period.

Here is one source: "We have been puzzled by the mention of an Elizabeth Reynolds of whom we know nothing else, who married Richard Jennings in New London "the beginning of June 1678." Both were immigrants from the Barbados, British West Indies, and had Samuel b. Mar. 11, 1679; Richard b. 1680; and Elinor who m. Richard Manwaring. [Hotten, Original Lists, Immigrants to America 1600-1700]" from "The family of John and Sarah (Backus) Reynolds" originally published by the RFA in 1928. Marion Reynolds was assisted in compiling the family data by Mrs. Anna Rippier
