John Johnson was born in 1609 in Herne Hill, Kent, England, a few miles west of Canterbury. His parents were  William JOHNSON and Susan PORREDGE.  He married Susanna ASHERST in Herne Hill.  He came with his wife Susanna from Herne Hill, Kent, England.  He arrived in New England probably about 1630, and came possibly first to Charlestown with Capt. Edward Johnson who later went to Woburn. They were probably brothers.   John died soon after 12 Sep 1683 in Andover, Essex, Mass.

Although it is thought that he came from Herne Hill, Cantebury, Co. Kent, England, there is no trace of him having ever been there or that Davy Johnson, who came to America on the same ship, was his father.
John Johnson first appeared in the Ipswich, Mass. records in 1637 where the family lived until around 1657 when he and his grown son, Thomas, were given land in Andover. He was a cobbler (shoemaker) and one of the most prominent and wealthiest (through his large estate) citizens of his community. He took the Oath of Allegiance in Andover on February 11, 1678 with his four grown sons.

The exact date of his death is unknown, but is speculated to be between 1685 and 1688. He is likely buried in the Andover old burying ground and no tombstones remain.

• He moved with his family in about 1648 to Andover, Massachusetts after the settlement of that town, and he became one of the proprietors there.
  • Lots were assigned to him and to his son Thomas in 1657.
  • He was one of a coroner’s jury called 21st day, 11th month, in 1664 [21 JAN 1664 New Style] to hold an inquest on the body of Peter Allyn, who was found dead in the Shawsin river.

• His name is on the list of taxpayers in the south end, found in the first Assessor’s book, in 1679.

• ASSOCIATIONS:
  • In the 1635 passenger list of the James, John Johnson appeared immediately after the family of RALPH FARNHAM {1635, Ipswich} [GM 2:2:493-94]. Ralph Farnham died by 1648, when his widow remarried to Solomon Martin, another passenger on the same vessel. The combined Farnham and Martin family was also in Andover by 1657. This pattern of events encourages the identification of the subject of this sketch as that John Johnson who had daughter Elizabeth and son Thomas baptized at Strood, Kent, at the appropriate dates. Strood is adjacent to Rochester, the origin of Ralph Farnham, and no other Johnson baptisms were found at Strood between 1624 and 1639.
  • Under his sketch of John Johnson of New Haven, Savage suggested that this John Johnson was ?brother of Edmund, a fellow passenger, but it must be left for larger inquiry to reach certainty? [Savage 2:554], and he has been followed in thus hypothesis by others. EDMUND JOHNSON {1635, Newbury} resided first at Newbury and then at Hampton, and there is no indication of any genealogical connection between these two Johnson families. (Savage had no entry for John Johnson of Ipswich and Andover, and improperly assigned the 1683 death record for Susanna Johnson to a grandson of the immigrant [Savage 2:554-55].)

COMMENTS:

• No probate record has been found for John Johnson and there are no birth records for the seven children proposed to have been born in New England, all probably at Ipswich. There is plentiful evidence for Thomas as son of John, given above. There is also direct evidence for the existence of Hannah. On 29 November 1664, Shoreborne Wilson and John Wilson deposed that ?Hannah, daughter of John Johnson of Andover,? was at a certain place, and she made reference to ?her cousin William? [EQC 3:226]. On 26 September 1665, ?John Johnson brought in his daughter Hannah Hutcheson and was discharged his bond for her goode behavior and appearance? [EQC 3:274].
• One record associates Thomas Johnson, a known son of John Johnson, with Stephen Johnson. On 27 March 1666, ?Court being informed that the widow Preston had put out two of her sons, one to Thomas Johnson and another to Stephen Johnson, until twenty-one years of age, upon terms agreed, it was allowed and Mr. Bradstreet to see it done? [EQC 3:309]. For the remainder of the children listed for this immigrant, we know only that John Johnson was the only man of that surname in Andover at the appropriate time.
• On 25 March 1656, ?John Johnson of Ipswich? owed £6 12s. 6d. to the estate of John Ward of Ipswich [EQC 1:422], indicating that he had not yet moved to Andover. Thomas Johnson married in Andover on 5 July 1657, suggesting that the family had made the move by that date.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE:

• There is no comprehensive treatment of the family and descendants of John Johnson. In 1892 William W. Johnson published Johnson Genealogy: Records of the Descendants of John Johnson of Ipswich and Andover, Massachusetts, 1635-1892 ? (North Greenfield, Wisconsin, 1892), which focussed only on sons Thomas and Timothy. Frances Davis McTeer and Frederick C. Warner, in the course of studying the family of John Aslebee, prepared a careful study of the family of Timothy Johnson [TAG 41:12-16]. Both of these publications suggest that the other children listed above did belong to John Johnson.

• Immigrated as a young man (listed as age 26 on the passenger list) with his wife, 3 year-old daughter Elizabeth, and son Thomas.
  • They settled in Ipswich, north of Boston, where John had a lot on Argella Road next to Rev. Francis Dane.
    • (Rev. Dane later served at Andover for years, and was part of a political battle that got his daughter Elizabeth Dane Johnson and 3 of her children accused of witchcraft in 1692).
• In 1657, John and his son Thomas, soon to be married, were assigned lots in the new town of Andover (inland and several miles from Ipswich today).
  • The Johnsons and the Danes moved to Andover about 1659.
  • John appears as a normal citizen, on juries, in the militia and taking the oath of allegience on 11 Feb 1678
    • (his sons Thomas, Steven, Returne and William took the oath the same day).

• John's son Thomas is tied to him thorugh a deed dated 12 Sep 1715, which identified Thomas Johnson, "son and heir" to John Johnson, dec'd. The deed conveyed commonage in Ipswich originally granted to John in 1635.
• The other children attributed to John were not tied to him through primary sources as of the 1892 book, and a more recent account is not available at NEHGS. They are, however, generally accepted as his children because they are the only Johnsons in Andover at the time, and the timing of the marriages fits a generational pattern.
• Note: "Herne Hill" is not an official town, though most sources list that as John's origin.
  • "Herne" is in Kent, north of Canterbury, where Isaac and Edward Johnson are reportedly from. The connection (to John) apparently comes from a reference in Bailey's "History of Andover."

The descendants of Timothy Johnson as well as those of Thomas, claim that the emigrant ancestor came from Hern Hill, but the author has found nothing in he early records of Andover, to definitely substantiate the claim, but there is a strong pre­sumption endorsed by historians that the ancestors of the Andover Johnsons, resided at Hern Hill before coming to America , and it may be further presumed that John with his family came in 1630, to Charlestown with Capt. Edward Johnson, who afterwards settled at Woburn, and concerning whom there is positive evidence that he came from Hern Hill,and John may have been and probably was his brother. Lines of descent have been definitely traced from Timothy Johnson, and records of his descendants will appear in an appendix to this book...............
