About John Garfield Kaiser
From the Franklin County Historical Register
John was born on November 1, 1880, in Ottawa. He attended Ottawa schools and graduated from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in 1901. He was employed by his brother, Fred, at the Kaiser Palace Pharmacy at 232 South Main. In 1903, John married Mary Stacher of Ottawa. They had no children and later divorced. John left Ottawa and went to work at a drugstore in Kansas City, Missouri. He returned around 1920 and again worked for his brother. In 1925, he became a full partner in the business.
In 1926, John married Frances Wilson of Ottawa and in 1928 their only child, John Peter, was born. After approximately 20 years of marriage, John and Frances were divorced.
John's brother Fred died in 1927 and his nephew, Fred, joined him in the business and became a partner. The name of the store was changed to Kaiser Drug Company. In 1937, John and Fred opened a second store. The partnership was dissolved in 1945 and John assumed full ownership of the store at 420 South Main. Fred remained at the original store.
John devoted his life to his drugstore and worked there until he was 85. He died in 1966 at the age of 86.
From 1869 when Peter Kaiser opened his harness shop until 1966 when John Kaiser's drugstore closed, there was a Kaiser business on Main Street for 97 consecutive years.
