About John Thomas Kelly, SV/PROG
Joined 91st Argyllshire Highlander Reserve Battalion in Ireland. Survived the shipwrecking of the "Abercrombie Robinson" in Table Bay on 27 August 1842 Served on the Eastern Frontier at Fort Beaufort and Grahams Town Deserted twice on 21 February 1843 at Graham's Town and 6 February 1844 at Port Elizabeth/Lang Kloof. Most likely participated in the Battle (Skirmish) at Zwartkoppies (between Colesberg and Philipolis on the one side and Boomplaats on the other) 24-30 April 1845. AH Potgieter camped at Boomplaats at the time. Likely captured by the British forces at Twouwfopntein (five miles north of Swartkoppies on route to Boomplaats) on 1 May 1845; "sentenced to transportation for life"; and escaped from gaol. Most likely did not participate in the Battle of Boomplaats (1848) since AH Potgieter did not participate due to animosity between himself and Andries Pretorius. in 1845 Kelly trekked with AH Potgieter to Orighstad and later Schoemansdal.
