The family is believed to be descended from the Welsh chieftain, Cynrig ap Rhiwallon, grandson of Dingad ap Tudur Trefor. The Wrexham Kenricks are descended from Dingad's brother Lludice ap Tudur Trefor. The first person to adopt the Kenrick surname was Dafyd ap Cynwrig, anglicised as Sir David Kenrick, standard bearer to the Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy and Lord of Broughton.
