Following death of Kansas man Memorial plantings are initiated in Rogers parks system
A new project for the Rogers Parks and Recreation Commission was born when John Wilson, a Havana, Kan., horticulturist and naturalist died about six weeks ago.
With Mr. Wilson's death several friends of his in Rogers, Florida, and Havana, Lawrence and Wichita, Kan., as well as other place, decided that in lieu of flowers they would donate shrubs and trees for a place "selected as a natural, public area." T he location is Lake Atlanta in Rogers, and it is not known for certain that Mr. wilson ever visited the park, although he has relatives in this area. According to Harold Jones, Rogers Parks and Recreation director, plans call for a site to be centrally located for a stand to commemorate Mr. Wilson and other persons who may have plants placed in the park in their memory.
One Rogers man, a friend of Mr.. Wilson who asks to remain anonymous, states, "What we're looking for is not publicity in honor of the guy (Mr. Wilson), but to encourage persons to participate in the project: of memorial plantings.
Some 30 plants were set in the park late last week, and included five species of Virburnam, a Yellow Wood tree, an Dawn redwood, winter berry holly, Japanese Maples, Amur maples, a white flowering redbud, a Star magnolia, a Chinese dogwood, Rugos roses and several other plants.
Jones states, "The commission is pleased with the initiation of the project, and hopes to see more interest in it as time goes on."
It's a good start.
