Biography

John Lamb of Stonington, CT , likely the 7th known child of Edward & Margaret Lamb, was born say 1642 and died 10 Jan. 1703/4 is sometimes reported as either born, married, and/or died in Springfield, MA. However, he was in Braintree, MA from 1677-1686/7. Consequently, he was there through the duration of his 1st marriage to Mary (French) Poole and children were born (1690-ca 1696). Later, after John's 2nd marriage with Lydia, they moved to Stonington, CT where they probably had two children (ca 1698 and 1700-1704). His estate was probated in CT.

Note 1

Overlooked is the fact that John Lamb's wife, Lydia, was from Marshfield, MA. John of Braintree and Lydia from Marshfield would not have traveled to Springfield, MA to marry and then returned to Braintree where their children were born. Nothing connects this John Lamb, his wives, or his family directly or indirectly to Springfield, MA.

Note 2

Information regarding Lydia has been comingled with information about a Lydia Wright and information regarding John Lamb d 10 Jan. 1703/4 has been comingled with information regarding a John Lamb d 1690. For more on John Lamb of Springfield, his family, and marriage to Lydia Wright, see [3] The following regarding that other couple, is posted in findagrave.com:

Note 3

John Lamb of Stonington, CT who died 10 Jan. 1703/4 has been reported as a son of John and Ann Lamb of New London Co., CT. That John Lamb was from Maine. That reporting overlooks the fact that John died 10 Jan. 1703/4 was in Braintree, MA before moving to CT and that his probable parents were Edward and Margaret Lamb.

Note 4== ==Ancestors

The probable parents of John Lamb were Edward Lamb and Margaret, his wife, of Watertown, MA and Boston, MA. Margaret, widow of Edward Lamb married Samuel Allen of Braintree, MA.
Regarding Edward and Margaret Lamb, see "The Great Migration Begins" Vol. II, Pg. 1151-1152, which states in part: "That there was a son John who survived, probably born in the late 1640s, is based on several pieces of circumstantial evidence. First, there was a John Lamb who married in Braintree about 1677 Mary (French) Poole, widow of Samuel Poole (NEHGR 12:353). Second, the widow of Edward Lamb remarried to Samuel Allen of Braintree. Third, John Lamb had among his children a son Samuel and a daughter Margaret, possibly named for his mother and stepfather."

Earlier researchers, Frank B. Lamb and Waldo C. Sprague, came to similar conclusions that John Lamb of Braintree, MA and Stonington, CT was an unrecorded son of Edward and Margaret Lamb of Watertown, MA and Boston, MA and that the widow Margaret Lamb married to Samuel Allen of Braintree, MA.

Wives & Children

John Lamb married in about 1676-1677, to Mary French, daughter of John and Grace French, and widow of Samuel Poole. John and Mary (French) Lamb's children were recorded in Braintree, MA in 1677 through 1686/7:

Grace b 15 Oct. 1680 MA
Hannah b 19 Oct. 1683 MA believe m to Roger Corrary

John Lamb married in about 1688, to Lydia (maiden name unknown - for further regarding Lydia, see memorial for Lydia Lamb). The births of their children were recorded in Braintree, MA in 1690 through 1696. At least one child (David) was born in CT. He was baptized in Preston, CT in 1699.

For the most part, John Lamb would have been raised in the household of Samuel and Margaret Allen (Margaret, the mother of John Lamb). That adds weight to the observation that John's son, Samuel, and daughter, Margaret, may have been named after Samuel and Margaret Allen.

The following is proof that Joseph Lamb and David Lamb were sons of John Lamb of Stonington, CT.
A Stonington, CT deed dated 14 Oct. 1719, from Joseph Lamb to David Lamb, states whereas John Lamb, father of the parties, by his last will and testament dated 12 May 1703, bequeathed to Joseph and David his whole farm in Stonington to be equally divided between them when they should become of age, and whereas ye Joseph and David have mutually agreed to divide, Joseph quit-claims all ye northmost or northwest part of ye farm to David, beginning .... Witnessed by C. Christopher and Sarah Christopher. [6] John Lamb died 10 Jan. 1703/4.
