About John Leckie, of Newland
Origins
In 1661 John Leckie married Jean (or Janet) Buchanan, daughter of Sir George Buchanan of Buchanan, by whom he had a son, John, who was baptised in Gargunnock church on 27th November 1666. Only two years later, in 1668, financial difficulties resulted in the estate being taken over by David Moir of Craigarnhall, Sheriff Clerk of Stirling probably in settlement of a loan or mortgage. That is the end of the line of Leckies of Leckie.
Gargunnock is an area of Scotland about 10 miles from the old town of Leitchtown (now Blairhoyle), and
was the ancestral home of the Leche/ Leckie/ Leitch families over hundreds of years.
The migration of the Leche name (Leckie, phonic spelling), occurred from the Island of Bute in the 14th century to the Scottish mainland around Stirling.
John was proprietor of the lands of Croy-Leckie, afterwards the property of Mr. Blackburn, and of the lands of Balvie, which became the property of Mr. Campbell-Douglas. Having joined the cause of the Stuarts with his brother-in-law, Rob Roy, in the rebellion of 1715, his estates were forfeited, and he fled the country with all his family, except the youngest son and a daughter, who remained in Scotland.
