About John Godfrey Lipe, III
John and Rachel left Cabarrus County, North Carolina, on 9 September 1831 and journeyed to the prairie wilderness of Illinois. Accompanying them were their nine youngest children who ranged in age from 2 to 17 years. Rachel was also pregnant with their 12th child during the arduous trip and gave birth to Sarah two months after their arrival in Illinois.
Traveling by wagon train, they had moved slowly over wagon traces that were little more than blazed trails. The trip was about 725 miles and they arrived in Montgomery County on 16 November 1831. They settled on Fawn Creek and at one time owned 500 acres of land. They were said to be the second family to settle in that area.
In 1842 John and Rachel donated land from their acreage on which was built St. John's Lutheran Church, north of Irving, Illinois. In 1844 John and Rachel donated additional land next to the church for use as a cemetery.
