About John W. Looney, Jr.
This John Looney served in the War of 1812 three different times, was wounded in the hip or thigh and also attained the rank of Capt. before being discharged. He served in the same unit as his son, Henry Looney, and they settled in early Alabama in St. Clair County where there is now a historical Looney log home.
Please do not confuse either of these Capt. John Looney with the Cherokee Indian Chief who also went by that name and who is buried in the National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. under this same title, i.e., Capt. (Note: he actually served as a Private during the Creek War / War of 1812 and was wounded through the shoulder). There has not been any documentation of a family connection found between this Cherokee Chief and the other Looney family members mentioned who were Scot-Irish descent.
