John Lovelace, 2nd Baron Lovelace

John Lovelace, 2nd Baron Lovelace (February 1616 – 25 November 1670 was a British peer and Royal servant.

John was born in Hurley, Berkshire the son of Richard Lovelace, 1st Baron Lovelace and his wife, Margaret, the daughter of London merchant William Dodworth, and educated at Christchurch College, Oxford. He lived at Ladye Place at Hurley which he inherited on the death of his father.

He was an ardent Royalist and was committed by the Parliamentarians to the Tower of London and made to pay a heavy fine of 18,373l. 1s. 10d. After the restoration of the Monarchy he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire from 28 August 1660 to 25 November 1670. In 1670 he was made steward of the old Royal palace at Woodstock and died in the palace gatehouse on 25 September 1670. He was buried in the old priory church in Hurley.[1]

After his death he was succeeded by his son John Lovelace, 3rd Baron Lovelace. His wife Anne, daughter of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland, succeeded her niece as 7th Baroness Wentworth, which after her death passed to their granddaughter Martha Johnson.

• John Lovelace, 2nd Baron Lovelace of Hurley was the son of Richard Lovelace, 1st Baron Lovelace of Hurley. He married Anne Wentworth, Baroness Wentworth, daughter of Thomas Wentworth, 1st and last Earl of Cleveland and Anne Croftes, on 11 July 1638.1 He died on 14 November 1670.1

• John Lovelace, 3rd Baron Lovelace (1641 – 27 September 1693) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1661 to 1670 when he inherited the peerage as Baron Lovelace.
• Lovelace was born at Hurley, Buckinghamshire, the son of John Lovelace, 2nd Baron Lovelace, and Lady Anne, 7th Baroness Wentworth and Baroness Le Despenser.[1] He matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford, on 25 July 1655, and was awarded MA on 9 September 1661.[2]

• Lovelace married in 1662 Martha Pye, the daughter and coheiress of Sir Edmund Pye, 1st Baronet, of Bradenham, Buckinghamshire. They had one son, John, who died in infancy, and three daughters. The peerage passed to his cousin William’s son, John Lovelace, 4th Baron Lovelace, who became a Governor of the New York colony.[3] Their daughter Martha married Henry Johnson, said to be 'the greatest shipbuilder and shipowner of his day'; and succeeded her grandmother as the 8th Baroness Wentworth.

• LOVELACE, JOHN, third Baron Lovelace of Hurley (1638?–1693), was grandson of Sir Richard Lovelace (1568–1634) of Hurley, Berkshire, who was knighted at Dublin on 5 Aug. 1599, and elevated to the peerage by Charles I on 30 May 1627. His father was John Lovelace, second baron (1616–1670), and his mother, Lady Anne, daughter and eventual heiress of Thomas Wentworth, first earl of Cleveland. It was this ‘Lady Anne’ to whom Richard Lovelace dedicated his ‘Lucasta.’ Of his grandfather, Sir Richard, Fuller says: ‘He was a gentleman of mettal; and in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, making use of letters of mark, had the successe to light on a large remnant of the King of Spain's cloth of silver, I mean his West Indian fleet; wherewith he and his posterity are warmer to this day’ (Worthies, 1811, i. 112). Of the same man, Garrard, in a letter to the Earl of Strafford, dated 3 June 1634, says: ‘Lovelace being my neighbour, born near Windsor, I knew him well, though he was born but to 400l. a year, yet he left to his only son, aged near 20, near 7,000l. a year: All got by a fortunate marriage with a rich citizen's daughter (of which an early example), she was worth to him 50,000l.’ (Strafford, Letters and Despatches, ed. Knowles, i. 260; Hist. MSS. Comm. 11th Rep. App. vii. p. 213). His father was a staunch royalist, who signed the declaration in favour of Charles I in June 1642, and joined the king at Oxford in August 1643 (Clarendon, Hist. v. 346, vii. 174). He came in to compound for delinquency on 24 March 1645, was assessed to pay a fine of 18,373l. 1s. 10d., and after numerous petitions, reviews, abatements, and delays, succeeded in getting his sequestration suspended after payment of about 4,000l. (Cal. Comm. Comp. ii. 1188). He was lord-lieutenant of Berkshire from 1660 to 1668, died at Woodstock 25 Sept. 1670, and was buried at Hurley (Ashmole, Antiq. of Berkshire, p. 207; Whitelocke, Memorials, 1682, pp. 76, 352; Cal. State Papers, Dom. 1660–1667 passim). Details of some clumsy attempts at intrigue made by him during 1643 and 1644, in which he was the dupe of Sir Harry Vane and other parliament men, are given in Baillie's ‘Correspondence’ (Bannatyne Club, ii. passim).

• Sir Roger Wentworth, of Codham Hall, by his wife Anne Tyrrell (see back to number 2 of XIV. of this note) had a second son, Henry Wentworth, Esq., Mountnessing, Co. Essex, and died in his father's lifetime, leaving by his wife Anne, daughter of Reginald Hammond, Esq. (with other issue), a son, John Wentworth, Esq., born 1540, buried at Gosfield, 3 April, 1588. He inherited Gosfield Hall from his uncle Sir John Wentworth, Kt. (see back to number 2 of XIV. of this note), and by his first wife Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Christopher Heydon, Kt., had with other issue a son, John Wentworth, Esq., born 1564, buried in Gosfield church, 11 February, 1613-4, who married Cecelia, daughter of Sir Edward Unton, by Anne, Countess of Warwick, and had with other issue Sir John Wentworth, Kt., of Gosfield, created a Baronet, 29 June, 1611, and died in October 1631, when, having no surviving male issue, the Baronetcy expired.
• He married Catherine, daughter of Sir Moyle Finch, Kt., who died in September 1639. They had, with several other daughters, a daughter Lucy, who married Thomas, 4th Baron Wentworth, and 1st Earl of Cleveland, as above stated.

  • 2. William, who died in 1623, aged six years, and was buried at Toddington, Co. Bedford.
  • 3. Charles, who died in 1622, in his second year, and was buried at Toddington aforesaid.
  • 4. Anne, who died in infancy.
  • 5. Mary, who died unmarried in January 1632-3, aged 18, and was buried at Toddington.
  • 6. Anne, of whom hereafter.
• The Earl by his second wife, Lucy, had an only daughter
  • 7. Catherine, who married William Spencer, Esq., of Cople, Co. Bedford, and died without issue.
• The second wife, Lucy, died 23 November 1651, and was buried at Toddington.

• (22) Thomas Wentworth, who was summoned to Parliament, 16 Chas. I., as Lord Wentworth of Nettlestead. He was also knight, and died 7 March, 1664-5, in his father's lifetime and without male issue. He married Philadelphia, daughter of Sir Ferdinand Carey, Ktn., who died 4 May 1696, and was buried, with her husband, at Toddington aforesaid. Their only issue was a daughter
  • (23) Henrietta Maria, who, according to the terms of the patent, succeeded her grandfather as Baroness Wentworth. She survived his execution only a few months, dying 23 April 1686, and was buried at Toddington.
• The male line ceased of course on the death of her grandfather, the Earl of Cleveland, and that title expired; but the Barony of Wentworth passed from her, at her death, to her Aunt Anne (see back to number 6 of (21) of this note), who married, 11 July 1638, John, Lord Lovelace. They had a son John, who died in his mother's lifetime, leaving a daughter, Martha, who succeeded to the Barony of Wentworth. _______________________
