SOME BRIEF NOTES ON THE "LOWRY" FAMILY IN ELIZABETH CITY COUNTY

When this family came to this region is unknown to me. The first notice I have of them is 1704, when a Mr. William Lowry was listed in the "Quit Rent Roll" of Elizabeth City County. He owned 426 acres of taxable land. In 1751, a Mr. John Lowry was listed as a land owner in the Elizabeth City County Parish "processioning", which was procedure carried out every four years or so to define property bounds (by walking them) for taxation purposes. On May 22, 1783 a Mr. John Lowry presented a claim to county court for re- imbursement for 2400 Ibs. of beef he provided to our local militia during the Revolution. It was evidently a valid claim, as he recieved payment of 30 Ibs. (sterlingg?) on August 21st of the same year. After the Revolution, property tax data again begins, and a John Lowry is listed in 1~87 as owning 525 acres. The 1810 census, the first perserved in this area, lists four families by the name of Lowry, the heads of which were Catherine, Elizabeth, Francis, and Robert. An extract from U.S. Army records, dated March 28,1863, indicates that the Union Army had taken possession of the "Lowry" Farm, along with many others in the areas belonging to "absetltee Disloyalists. No other names are given. About 1890, a map of Elizabeth City County was made which shows the boundary of the Lowry farm, Shellbanks, on the Southwest prong of the Rack River on the north side. This same location was given on the less accurate "Chilton" map made by the British in 1781. This map actually gives a sketch of the house. Around the turn of the century, Hampton Institute acquired Shellbank for an agricultural school, which· was in turn acquired by the federal government as part of Langley Field in 1917.
