  • Sir Richard Lowther (14 February 1532 – 27 January 1607) of Lowther Hall, Westmorland was an English soldier and official. He was twice High Sheriff of Cumberland and Lord Warden of the West March in 1592.
  • He was grandson of John Lowther, captain of Carlisle Castle in 1545, and who was twice sheriff of Cumberland during the reign of Henry VIII. John Lowther married Lucy, daughter of Sir Christopher Curwen of Workington. He was the eldest son of Hugh Lowther (died 1546?), by his wife Dorothy, daughter of Henry Clifford, 10th Baron Clifford. He succeeded to the family estates at Lowther and elsewhere in Westmorland on his grandfather's death in 1552.[1]

The marriage agreement Sir Hugh Lowther and Sir Thomas Curwen, dated 1502, is abridged as follows: John Lowther, son and heir apparent of the said Hugh shall wed and with the grace of God take to wife Lucy, daughter of the said Sir Thomas before the feast of the nativity next, if the license thereto necessary may be gotten at the cost of the parties equally born afor the saidday; Also the said Hugh within 40 days next after the espousal had and solemnised shall enfe of the said John and Lucy and their heirs with lands and tenements to the yearly value of 20 pounds sterling over all charges and reprisals within the counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, also the said Hugh shall not alienate any lands that he has or may have so that the said John may after the decease of his father inherit all the said lands and tenements. For the which wedding and feofment the said Sir Thomas shall pay to the said Sir Hugh and his assigns 440 mark of lawful English money in manner and form as follows, that is to say, at the day of wedding 100 marks Sterling and then by installments twice a year 10 pounds Sterling. Also the said Hugh grants that if the said Lucy die, as God defend, without issue, that all further payment cease and be no more asked or paid, etc."
