About Sir John Mablethorpe

Disputes

  • Unless hitherto unavailable sources are made accessible, Sir John Mablethorpe's parentage is uncertain at best. As of 21 Feb 2024, no extant, well-regarded public-domain source deferring to a primary source proves his parentage.
    • Pedigree charts are useful for clues that may lead to higher level sourcing. However, Pedigrees alone are not entirely reliable for all familial connections they show.
    • Without sure sourcing, Assumptive Connections = Mythology, not Genealogy.
  • No proof he was born exactly in 1319 in Greens Norton. IF (a big IF) his father is ever proven to be Sir Robert, then John would not have been born in Greens Norton. Iffy sources show Sir Robert as father of one child: Elizabeth.
  • No proof he died precisely in 1370 ... let alone in ¿Lincoln, Lincolnshire?
    • That Mablethorpe is in Lincolnshire does not an event place make.
  • No public domain source shows him being sheriff of Northampton(shire).
    • John's not included in the book List of Sheriffs for England and Wales, from the Earliest Times to A.D. 1831 for Northamptonshire. See Archive.org, p. 92.
    • John's not included on Wikipedia's "High Sheriff of Northamptonshire" webpage, (date: 21 Feb 2024)

Books

  • Douglas Richardson mentions "Margery, dau. and heiress of John Mablethorpe, knt." in reference to bequeathed properties coming into the marriage of Thomas Greene and Mary Talbot. As an aside, Richardson makes no mention of John as a sheriff.
  • Richardson provided sources after the section he wrote instead of datum by datum. His lumped together sources as follows:
