About John Manierre

John Manierre was born September 25, 1782, New London, CT. He was the son of Louis Manierre and Rebecca Miner Manierre.

John's father died when he was twelve. His mother lived six years longer than John did. John was a merchant in New London, CT. His business principally involved the sale of whalers’ supplies. New London at that time was one of the major whaling ports. “He was induced to [go into] an iron speculation in which he is supposed to have become insolvent, and shortly after died.” (Source: The Times, a Chicago newspaper, April 20, 1878)

John Manierre was married two times.

Three children survived from his first marriage: Edward, who moved to Chicago in 1834, a daughter who became Mrs. George W. Snow (Mr. Snow, the first civil engineer of Chicago, arrived there in a canoe, and at one time owned a parcel of land bounded by South State, West Van Buren, South Dearborn, and West Jackson), and a second daughter, Emmiline, who was the wife of J. B. Gray. Upon the death of his first wife, John Manierre married Jeanette Lee, who was the sister of his first wife. They had two children: George Manierre I (who moved to Chicago) and a younger brother, Benjamin Franklin Manierre (who lived in New York City).

John died February 18, 1823 (New London cemetery record shows February 13). Although he was buried in CN in 1823, New London cemetery record shows he was reinterred from "2nd Burial Ground" to a newer one Oct. 19, 1872. Records (viewed c. 1985) at Graceland Cemetery, Chicago, show that his remains were reinterred there.
