Joseph was the son of Joseph George Markley (1687-1755) and Anna Balthasar Dinkle Markley (1685-1787). Merkle in Germany. Jospeh married Eva Hummel (1729-1813) in 1746 in Germany. (Don't have the name of her parents).

1749 3 Aug: may have immigrated from Germany to Philadelphis on ship "Crown"

1765: Settled in Elk Lick Twp, Somerset Co Pa as one of the first white settlers.

Salisbury was founded April 15, 1795 by Joseph Markley. The tract of land, "John's Fancy", was given to Joseph by his father John Markley. John, his wife Eva, and oldest son Jacob came from Wurtemberg, Germany in August 1749. The town had a few different names prior to becoming Salisbury. These names included Brushtown and Salsburrich. The Dutch settlers decided on the name Salsburrich because of the salt deposits in the area. When the first post office was established the name was officially changed to Salisbury. In 1862 the borough was incorporated under the name "Elk-Lick".

Joseph and Eva had the following known 7 children: Jacob Markley M 1748 in Germany; Margaret Markley F 1753 in Elk Lick Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA; Mathias Markley M 1757 in Glade, Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA; Joseph Markley M 1763 in Salisbury, Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA; Peter Markley M 1767 in Elk Lick, Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA; Susannah Markley F 1770 in Elk Lick Township, Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA and Eve Catherine Markley F 1774 in Brothers Valley, Bedford, Pennsylvania, USA.

JOHANN PETER MERKLE known as JOHN MARKLEY OF SOMERSET CO. PA born 1752. John Markley was born in Bad Wimpfen, Germany Nov. 27, 1724 and died Oct. 7, 1796 in Elk Lick Twp., Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He married Eve (Eva) in Germany about 1746. Eve was born in Germany about 1727 and died in 1813 in Somerset Co., Pa. John, Eva, and oldest son Jacob (b. 1747/48 - d. 1838) came to America from Wurttemberg , Germany August 15, 1749 (from Salisbury Penn, History), arriving in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John and Eve are buried on one of the original Markley farms now called Hoerchler Farm; it is about 1-1/2 miles west of West Salisbury, which is on the west bank of Castleman River and the village of Salisbury. It is a Pennsylvania registered landmark, established in 1801. The inscription on their tombstone: "JOHN MARKLEY, born 1725 in Germany, died 1796. EVA his wife, born 1727 in Germany, died 1813. First settlers in Somerset County."

OTHER THOUGHT TO BE KNOWN FACTS: In 1786 there was a tract of land surveyed to John; the name given to this tract in the survey or patent was "John's Fancy" on April 25, 1786. The tract contained 242 acres and was on the east side of Casselman River. This was John's favorite spot and became the home place.

It is known that long before "John's Fancy" John lived in what is now known as Elk Lick Township, Somerset County. The family settled there about 1765. John had other tracts of land surveyed to him. In 1772 or earlier John had 200 acres surveyed to him. In 1775 he had a tract of 355 acres called "Grassy Run" and about the same time he had a tract of 175 acres called "Flog Hill." On March 28, 1785, 460 acres called "Mount Joy" was surveyed to him.

In 1788 John sold the home place "John's Fancy" to his son Joseph. The ancient village of West Salisbury in Elk Lick Township, Somerset, County, Pa. was founded April 15, 1795 by Joseph Markley on part of the tract of land surveyed to his father John in 1786.

Eve had her own property. John and Eve had a second house, built on one of Eve's two properties. The tract was called "Paradise." The carpenter who built the home was Adam Miller, a nephew. In 1798 after John's death Eve sold the home to Adam Miller. All of this is shown on the 1798 direct tax list. This is also a Pennsylvania registered landmark maintained by the Somerset Historical Center.

1788: wolf his home place Johns Fancy to his son, Joseph. The deed was dated Jan 1788. The tract called; Grassy Run" seems to have sold in part to his son in law, Jacob Keagey. He also sold the tract called "Mount Joy" to Keagey.

1796: Will was executed on Oct 5, 1796 and probated on Oct 11, 1796.

John Marley was born in Germany about 1725 and died on his farm in Elk Lick twp in Oct 1796. His wife, Eve died in 1813. They are buried in one of the old farm graveyards near Salisbury. There are burial grounds on both the Jacob Markley place now owned by one Beachey, and on the Hendrickson farm. It is probable that John and Eve are buried in one of the three, small old grave yards on these old Markley lands. Buried near Salisbury in old farm graveyard.
