About John Thomas Marks

Some information suggests that these members of the Marks family are from Richmond County Virginia, which is 40-60 miles north east of Richmond City. However, then there is discussion of a move to Goochland or Fluvanna County, which are just west of Richmond City (Fluvanna County was subdivided from the eastern side of Albemarle County, which was earlier subdivided from the western side of Goochland County. In the early 1700s the location was Goochland County, by the end of the 1700s it was Fluvanna). Perhaps there was an intermediate move not recorded because Richmond seems to be the same place (it isn't). Two of John's children appear to be found in Columbia, Fluvanna County in the early 1800s. There is another confusion involving Fluvanna and Kanawha West Virginia. This is a confusion because Columbia in Fluvanna County is at the origin of the James River and Kanawha Canal, which once stretched into the Kanawha River (which flows through Kanawha County West Virginia). It appears that some members of the Marks family eventually moved into West Virginia or Ohio (possibly following the route of the Kanawha canal), but these early generations seem to have lived first in Richmond ("old Rappahannock") County, [then Richmond City,- Despite proximity, it appears they never lived in Richmond City, it is likely the link to Fluvanna is somehow associated with the Bragg family] then Columbia Township in Fluvanna County (if after 1777, otherwise Albemarle or Goochland). This makes them very likely the ancestors (although the route is unclear) of my ancestor Vincent Marks [Vince Vincent Marks, of Nelson Co..]
