1771, 20 Feb. - FreWB_A1_393: Frederick County, North Branch (Rawlings) - Richard Percival Will - executors: Joseph Mounts, Mary Percival; witnesses: John Marshall, William Marshall, Joseph Enlows, William Patterson, Daniel Cresap.

1773-1774 - Living on Cheat River per statement by Mary Marshall Blue referenced in "History of the Valley". Probably near Horseshoe Bottom since area settled by people from South Branch, Bingaman, and surveyed by Joseph Cresap in 1774.

1777, 13 Jan. - Revolutionary Patriots of Washington County, Maryland, 1776-1783, Henry C. Peden, Jr: MARSHALL, John. Private, Militia, 2nd Class, Capt. Daniel Cresap's Company, 3rd Battalion, 1776/1777 [Ref: M-241]. On January 13, 1777 he was brought before the Committee of Observation and charged with "drinking the King's health, success to Lord and General Howe, and the British Army, saying that the King would have the country before the middle of June next, that if he should be put in confinement at Elizabeth Town, he valued it not, for Lord Howe would soon release him." John Marshall acknowledged the charge and was ordered "kept in safe custody until he could give sufficient security that he shall neither say nor do anything inimical to the United States of America. " The next day he joined the continental service and was released from confinement [Ref: Q-37, Q-39]. See "Richard Acton, " q.v.

note: Served in same unit with John Coy, Sr. and John Coy, Jr., son Mark married (1788)the daughter of John Coy, Sr.; John Coy, Sr. and Mark owned adjoining land in Nelson County.
