The Martins of Botetourt Co., VA are related to the Martins of Rowan Co., NC. We believe that the Botetourt Co. Martins descend from William Martin, son of John Martin and 1st wife Lydia Anne Arundel Co., MD (John later in Frederick Co., MD). A William Martin purchased Botetourt Co., VA land from a Beatty in 1750. The sons of land owner Susanna Beatty were neighbors of the Martins in Frederick Co., MD. Sons of William APPEAR to include a Joshua, Zadok, and Benjamin (and 1 or 2 others as well). More research of the Botetourt Co. Martins is needed. The Martins of Knox Co., KY (Zadok and Joshua) are almost certainly one and the same as Zadok and Joshua of Wilkes Co., NC 1790 and earlier of Botetourt Co., VA. I've been swamped with research involving other family lines and the family of Joshua Martin (son of John Martin and 2nd wife Ann), so I've not been able to do further research on this family.

Martins of Frederick Co., MD>NC>GA&KY Posted by: Steve Martin Date: January 20, 2000 at 06:01:16 of 14307 John Martin m.1st Lydia (surname not verified) about 1723 in Anne Arundel Co.,MD. Lydia died about 1731; it's possible that her death was related to the birth of her last child William b. 1731. It has been reported that Lydia may have been a daughter of Peter Hanks and wife Mary Beale (both of Anne Arundel Co.). The birth records of St. Anne's Parish certainly confirm that Peter and Mary Hanks had a daughter Lydia born 1704, but I have not yet found any records that confirm that this is the same Lydia that married John Martin. John Martin m. 2nd Ann (surname unknown) in 1733 as recorded in the Queen Caroline Parish records. Ann had 1st married Charles Dorsey. Her children by Dorsey were: Margaret, Jane, Ann, Aquila (a son) and Ellis (a dau.).

In 1732 John Martin purchased from Daniel Dulany 100 acres near the Monocacy River in what was then Prince George's Co.MD. This area was later partitioned off as part of Frederick Co. John apparently did not move his family onto his newly purchased land for several years. John was appointed Overseer of the Monocacy-Annapolis Road 1744, '45, '46 & '47. He was appointed Constable of Frederick Co. Manor Hundred in 1749. Children of John Martin and 1st wife Lydia: Joshua Martin (b. 21 Sept. 1723 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - John Martin had two sons named Joshua; this Joshua apparently died in his youth.

John Martin, Jr. (b. 1725 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - John, Jr. married Louisa (surname unknown). There are several records which indicate John, Jr. and wife Louisa moved to Loudon Co., VA during the 1760s.

?Elizabeth or ?Eleanor Martin (b. Feb. 1727 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - This name was very difficult to read on the microfilm; I've deduced that it is one of the two names presented here. Nothing more is known of this daughter.

Mary Martin (b. Feb. 1729 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - Frederick Co. records indicate that Mary likely lived to adulthood, but it is not known if she ever married.

William Martin (b. 1731 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - William may have settled in Botetourt Co., VA.

Children of John Martin and 2nd wife Ann: Benjamin Martin (b. 6 June 1734 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - Benjamin received 75 acres of Frederick Co. land from his father on 26 Sept. 1759. Benjamin later appears in the records of Rowan Co., NC by 1778. His spouse and children remain unknown.

Tabitha Martin (b. 1736 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - Tabitha lived to adulthood as evidenced by the Rowan Co., NC will of her younger brother Asa. Her spouse and children, if any, remain unknown.

Joshua Martin (b. 1738 Queen Caroline Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD) - Joshua also received 75 acres of Frederick Co. land from his father on 26 Sept. 1759; it was designated "Joshua's Beginning" in the land records. Joshua appears in the 1777 Tax records of Anson Co., NC. He moved to Wilkes Co., GA in 1787. Joshua married Mary (surname unknown). His children were: Joshua, Jr., John, Zadok, Elizabeth, Susannah, Anna, Mary "Polly", & Asa. Most of his children remained in Georgia during their lifetime; however, son John moved to Coosa Co., AL in 1834. Joshua Martin died January 1803 in Greene Co., GA.

Demarius Martin (a daughter, b. 10 April 1740 All Saint's Parish, Prince George's Co., MD) - Nothing more is known of this daughter.

Zadock Martin (b. 18 Nov. 1742 All Saint's Parish, Prince George's Co., MD) - Zadock first appears in the records of Rowan Co., NC in 1778. His spouse and children remain unconfirmed. It is possible that he and/or his children moved to Tennessee or Kentucky.

Appiah Martin (a daughter, b. 6 Feb. 1745/6 All Saint's Parish, Prince George's Co., MD) - Nothing more is known of this daughter.

Asa Martin (b. 30 Sept 1749 All Saint's Parish, Frederick Co., MD) - Asa married Elizabeth (surname unknown). He first appears in the records of Rowan Co., NC in 1778. His children as established by the estate records of Rowan Co. were: Betsey, Polly, Joshua, John, Benjamin, Sally, Joseph, & Asa. Asa Martin's will was probated 1807 in Rowan Co., NC; his sister Tabitha is mentioned in this will.

Asenith Martin ( b. 13 Sept. 1751 All Saint's Parish, Frederick Co., MD) Asenith married John Jacks circa 1769. Like most of her brothers, Asenith and her husband can be found in the records of Rowan Co., NC as early as the 1770s. Her children as confirmed by Jacks family researchers were: John, Richard Marion, Thomas, Mary, Anna, William Milton, & Tabitha. Asenith Martin Jacks died between 1811 and 1820 in ?Bourbon Co., KY.

This was the family of John Martin of Anne Arundel Co. and later Frederick Co., Maryland. I'm seeking anyone that has easy access to the Frederick Co., MD deed/land records of the late 1760s and early 1770s. I would like to establish when sons Benjamin, Joshua, Zadok, and Asa begin selling off their lands in preparation for their move to North Carolina. If you can be of assistance please contact me.

Children of John Martin and 1st. wife Lidia: Joshua b. 1723 in Anne Arundel Co., MD John b. 1725 in Anne Arundel Co., MD ?Elizabeth (name difficult to read on record) b. 1727 in Anne Arundel Co., MD Mary b. 1729 in Anne Arundel Co., MD William b. 1731 in Anne Arundel Co., MD Note: All of these children are recorded in the Queen Caroline Parish Register.

Children of John Martin and 2nd. wife Ann: Note: Ann was 1st. married to Charles Dorsey. Benjamin b. circa 1734 (date difficult to read) in Anne Arundel Co., MD Tabitha b. circa 1736 in Anne Arundel Co., MD Joshua b. circa 1738 in Anne Arundel Co., MD Note: All indications are that the 1st. son named Joshua, by wife Lidia, died young. Demarius (a dau.) b. 1740 in Frederick Co., MD Zadok b. 1742 in Frederick Co., MD Appiah (a dau.) b. 1745/6 in Frederick Co., MD Asa b. 1749 in Frederick Co., MD Asenith b. 1751 in Frederick Co., MD Note: The first three children by Ann were recorded in the Queen Caroline Parish Register; the last five children by Ann are recorded in the All Saints Parish Register.

Son John Martin, Jr. appears to have moved to Loudon Co., VA by the late 1760s. And indications are that son William moved to Botetourt Co., VA in 1750. Sons Benjamin, Joshua (2nd. Joshua) and Asa moved south to Rowan and Anson Co., North Carolina by 1777. Joshua later moved to Wilkes Co., GA by 1787. Daughter Asenith married John Jacks and was living in Rowan Co., NC by circa 1770. Daughter Tabitha is thought to have moved to North Carolina as well, for she is mentioned in the will of her brother Asa Martin; this will was probated 1807 in Rowan Co., NC.

Zadok Martin appears to be a son of William Martin; thus, a grandson of John Martin of Frederick Co., MD. His sons (Zadok, Jr., Isaac and Joseph) later moved to Ray Co., MO. Question: How was the birth date of 1769 and birthplace of NC confirmed? I've seen other records that indicate he was likely born in Virginia and moved to Wilkes Co., NC by 1790. He is thought to have had a brother named Joshua who moved with him to NC and later to KY. There is, of course, the other Zadok Martin (b. 1742 in MD)in Rowan Co., NC during the 1770s and 1780s; at present, nothing is known of him after that time.

John Martin of Fredrick Co., Maryland; his land was located near the Monocacy river from 1732-1759. He was appointed Constable of Manor Hundred March 1749, and was an Overseer of the Monocacy - Annapolis road 1744, 1745, 1746 & 1747. Wife's name: Ann. Known children: Demarius, Zadock, Appiah, Asa & Aseneth. All of these children were baptized at All Saints Parish Church in FredrickCo. Johh Martin deeded his land to Adam Link on May 14, 1759. Possibly related to Benjamin Martin of same county.

A Joshua Martin & Zadok Conner witnessed the Will of William Hallsey in Fredrick Co., MD on 25 July 1773. A Joshua Martin, wife Mary, and children John, Joshua, Jr., Zadock, Elizabeth, Susannah, Anna, Sarah Polly & Asa is later found in GA. This Joshua had moved to Wilkes Co., GA by 1791. An 1850 Alabama Census record, indicates that Joshua's son John was born in Maryland. Also suspect that son's Zadock and Asa of John Martin of Fredrick Co., MD moved to NC during or after the Revolutionary War. A Zadock Martin is listed in Wilkes Co., NC 1790 census, and an Asa Martin in the Rowan Co., NC 1790 census.
