Note from Ancestry.com family tree: (John Maxwell, natural son of John 7th Lord Herries Maxwell 3rd Earl of Nithsdale: John Maxwell definitely had a natural son John Maxwell as well as a lawful son John Maxwell. Mention of these two sons is made several times in the Inventory of the Nithsdale Muniments, etc. from 1641-1658 from the book dated Edinburgh, 1865 as well as once in the Book of Carlaverock. These half brothers knew of each other since they both were witnesses for several legal documents. John Maxwell's lawful wife Dame Gordon, Lady Herries also knew of his natural son since he was a witness to at least one legal document she was involved in 27 April 1641.)
