Geraldton Guardian Thursday 14 December 1950
Old Identity's Death Late Mr. J. D. McKillop EXTENSIVE TRAVELS A resident of Geraldton for about forty years, Mr. John Duncan McKillop, of Eleanor Street, died last Friday in the St. John of God Hospital, Geraldton, at the age of eighty-six years. Born in Oban (Scotland) in 1864, he served an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Glasgow, before going to Canada, the United States, South America and, finally, Australia. In February, 1893, at Broken Hill he married Miss Margaret Young, of Ballan, Victoria, who predeceased Him a number of years ago In Geraldton. There were two sons and two daughters of the marriage. Those surviving are Emily (Mrs. L. O'Dea, of Geraldton) and Kate (Mrs. L. Ramshaw, of Geraldton). Master John McKillop died in Kalgoorlie and the other son (Donald) was killed in the first world war The late Mr. John Duncan McKillop for a time worked at Mt. Sir Samuel, Broken Hill and then — in the gold rush period — at Kalgooriie. Subsequently he came to Geraldton, where for a number of years he followed his trade as a carpenter. A keen reader of news papers, both Australian and English, he was well informed on world events. He was greatly interested in cricket and — in his younger years — in soccer, when it was played in Geraldton. The funeral took place last Saturday in the Presbyterian cemetery at Utakarra, where the Rev. J. H. Gregson carried out the last rites.
