Biography

??

John emigrated with his parents and siblings in 1742. Called Little John, he was a weaver like his father, but he also did blacksmithing and ran a distillery. John opposed the American Revolution believing that God opposed it since all those who served the Revolution suffered death or illness. [He was however, assigned to be a Wagonmaster.] In April 1778, sixty-two of his comrades in the Sixth Battalion of York County, petitioned the State to remove him from service as he dishonored them by his Tory attitudes and speeches. John was actually found guilty of treason but died in early 1779 before any sentence was passed.

"Resuming our narrative of the McKinleys, John, son of the
immigrant, was born about 1728 and in his day was one of the foremost men of York county. He became a large landowner and frequently figures in important business transactions. When hos- tilities broke out with the mother country he staunchly supported the revolution and was made wagonmaster for Chanceford town- ship by the committee of safety. He died on his estate February 18, 1779, being survived by his widow Margaret, an only son David, great-grandfather of the president, and daughters Esther, Jean, Elizabeth and Susan. The widow subsequently married Thomas McCulloch. She died in the winter of 1781.

William McKinley (1843-1901) was born in Ohio.  It was his grandfather David McKinley, born 16 May 1755 in Chanceford Township who took that branch of the family west.  The president’s great-grandfather John was also born here c. 1728.  It was William’s great-great-grandfather David, born in Ireland c. 1705 and died in Chanceford c. 1760, who was one of the early Scot-Irish settlers of the “lower end” of the county.  Great-great-grandfather Robert Morton, whose daughter Margaret married John McKinley, was also in that neighborhood early on.
