Spurious Pedigree

It has been suggested that John McIlvaine here treated is the son of John McIlvane of Grimmet and his wife Anne Cunningham Genealogy.com: Anne Cunningham but this seems unlikely, impossible even, because John McIlvaine here treated married Sarah Clark, with whom he had a family, and emigrated from Scotland to Ballykeel in County Antrim, The McIlvains: 49 while Anne Cuningham's son John McIlvane, the last Laird of Grimmet, died unmarried and intestate before before 11 May 1747, the date upon which William Cunningham of Auchinskeith acted himself as cautioner for Anna McIlvane his sister german, who was confirmed as his executor dative qua nearest of kin on 17 May 1747. Death

John McIlvaine here treated died on 7 September 1737. He was buried at Islandmagee, in a little cemetery in the corner of the six acre filed. His granddaughter Janet's gravestone is pictured in a book "Gravestone Inscriptions, County Antrim, Vol 1, Islandmagee". HThe inscription on his memorial stone reads "Here lyeth the body of John McIlwain, who died Sept. 7, 1735, aged 79". The McIvains: 49-50

Note on the Move to Ballykeel, Islandmagee, County Antrim

They emigrated with John's nephew, Joseph, and the Clark and the Orr families, to Ireland in 1693/97. They settled in Ballykeel, Islandmagee, County Antrim. Three children born in Ayrshire, James, Thomas and Margaret came with them and three sons were born in Ireland: Andrew, George and Robert. John leased six acres near Muldersley Hill near Ballymacarry station.
