Major John Mikell of Revolutionary War fame came to South Carolina at an early age with his parents, also his brother William (Barnette) and sister Ursula. They came from Virginia and settled in South Carolina on the Great Peedee River in what is known as the Old Cheraw District and St. David's Parish prior to 1756. They were of Welch, German and Scotch descent and settled on the West side of the river a few miles above Long Bluff. About the year 1754-5 Major John Mikell married Ann Ball of Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of Bartholomew and Elizabeth Ball. A lady of unusual talent and education. She was from English ancestry. John Mikell, planter of Craven County, purchased 100 acres on the Great Peedee River from John Still on 25 August 1770. (M.C.D.R. No. 3 433). Then on 26 Apr. 1774, John Mikell with his wife Ann, sold same 100 acres to Abel Kolph (R. No. 4 498 MC..O.) (S.C.) He purchased land: "Enoch James to John Mikell, both of Craven County, 100 acres in Welch's Tract of Peedee River August 3, 1777. Recorded March 12, 1778: John Mikell, Jr. Witness." John Mikell advanced to the rank of Major in the American Revolution and was a man of decided character and influence. Major John Mikell and Capt. (Alex) McIntosh were on Black Creek at a point nearest Society Hill (S.C.) in 1781-82 in Lt. Col. Lemuel Benton's Regiment, Commander of Cheraw Militia of St. David's Parrish. (Ref. History of Old Cheraws by Bishop Alex. Gregg p. 387- 389.) A great grandaughter of Major John Mikell, Margaret Ann Thomson in 1897 wrote "grandfather said his father was a German raised in America, he married a Miss Ball, they had several daughters and three sons - James Mikell, my grandfather, was among the younger children.
