John Milleman

John was probably born in Tyringham, Berkshire Co. His father,Wait Milleman, died when he was between 10 and 14 years of age, and hisbrother-in-law Lyman Brown was named his guardian. John was "of Onondaga Co., NY" by1815 when he witnessed the sale of his brother Elijah's land in Tyringham,Berkshire Co., MA. He was still there in 1820, and may have had some ofElijah's family with him, as there are more people shown on the census than can beaccounted for by his own family. In 1830 he was enumerated in Hartman, NiagaraCo., NY. He has not been found on the 1840 census, and may have been missed bythe censustaker. According to a biography of daughter Polly, the family went toMichigan, probably Branch Co., before moving to Parke Co., IN, where theyappear on the 1850 census. They probably moved to Parke County because Eliza'sbrothers Charles and Augustus Abbott were already there. Charles Abbottpatented 80 acres in Parke County on 13 Nov 1822. Augustus was in ParkeCounty at least by 1827. After the death of her brothers, Charles's land was deededto Eliza and her mother Huldah Abbott.

Eliza7 (James6 Jesse5 Peter4 George3,2,1) was a descendant ofGeorge Abbott of Rowley, Massachusetts. He was born in England about 1602 anddied in Rowley in 1647, five years after arriving in this country.

The children of John and Eliza used at least four differentspellings of the name. The eldest, John Sanford, used Millerman, as did some ofCharles' descendents, while the others used Milleman. There is evidencethat Diantha used Millerman. Harlow, John Henry, and George used Millemon.The four youngest children spelled the name Milliman.

The graves of John and Eliza have not been located, althoughthey are undoubtedly in Parke County. A monument to them and their twelvechildren has been placed in Bruin Cemetery.
